Double Teenage Suicide: Friar Lawrence Tells All
Written by Gloria Casson and Kalisa Goertz
Early yesterday morning, Juliet Capulet was supposedly found dead in her room. Her nurse went up to her room to get her ready for her wedding when she found her unresponsive. Friar Lawrence later confirmed that Juliet was dead. But was she really? Earlier reports from the Capulet house told us that Juliet wasn’t very happy about getting married. Later that night, her body was found in the Capulet tomb with a fresh wound that suggested she killed herself just minutes earlier. Is it possible that she faked her death to get out of her marriage, only to kill herself later that night? According to Friar Lawrence, yes.
Friar Lawrence came to us today with his story. Two days ago, Juliet went to him looking for advice. He told us that she was extremely upset and wanted to kill herself. He gave her a potion that would make her sleep for 24 hours and make it look like she was dead. He told her that this would get her out of her marriage to Paris. Apparently it worked, because the nurse and Lord and Lady Capulet were “freaking out,” according to the Friar. They had the funeral that day and Juliet was put in the Capulet tomb. Friar Lawrence told us that he sent a letter to Romeo to tell him everything, but the letter never got there. Romeo arrived at the tomb last night with a poison, and thinking that Juliet was dead, he drank the poison and killed himself minutes before Juliet woke up. The Friar arrived and found Juliet crying over Romeo’s body. He tried to get Juliet to leave with him, but she wouldn’t leave Romeo’s side. He later found her body as well.
No one except for Juliet, Friar Lawrence, and the audience knew that Juliet wasn’t really dead. Even Romeo thought she was dead. This dramatic irony led to the events that ended in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
